Howard Goodall's Big Bangs

Five Momentous Discoveries that Changed the Course of Classical Music

Why does our music sound the way it does? Who sorted out how to write it down? Where do all the keys come from and what do they mean? What does a symphony have in common with a pop song, and what makes music sound distinctively "western" or "eastern"?

Award-winning BBC presenter, broadcaster and composer Howard Goodall's humorous and accessible book "Big Bangs" is an excellent introduction to five key events that have shaped western musical history -- and with it, our own personal musical experiences and understanding.

This course follows Goodall through his interesting, and often surprising, musical whistle-stop tour, offering participants the chance to look further into the detail, background, and musical implications of the discoveries that have shaped how we make music today.

This course takes place in five 2-hour sessions, one for each Big Bang:

  1. The thin red line: the invention of musical notation
  2. From literature into music: the invention of opera and musical theatre
  3. Man's creation of the new (fake) world harmony: the invention of equal temperament
  4. Christophoro's amazing loud & soft machine: the invention of the piano
  5. From wax to eternity: the invention of recorded sound

Based on the Oxford tutorial system, sessions will feature an introductory lecture by Kathryn, illustrated by recordings, scores and some live musical demonstration, followed by guided discussions in which participants will share their ideas and impressions. Refreshments will be served half way through each session.

Fees: $190 per person per course for five 2-hour sessions. All materials provided. Some bursaries available. No previous musical experience necessary.
