Musical Meaning

What does music mean? How does it affect us? How do we know?

Many people think of music as a "universal language", one that has the power to encapsulate our thoughts and feelings, and to touch our innermost experience with an eloquence that cannot be expressed in words.

But how does music do this? And if music is an abstract art, what does it realy mean, and how can its effect appear to be so personal?

This course looks into some of the perspectives on musical meaning offered by key thinkers, artists and writers over the course of western history. Each session will be based around specific pieces of music and related themes (recordings provided for advanced listening), and will offer participants the chance to reconcile their own ideas on musical meaning with key historical perspectives.

This course takes place in four 2-hour sessions, one for each topic:

  1. What does music mean (if anything)? Reconciling our impressions with historical perspectives (Gregorian chant/ baroque dance suites/ string quartet/ popular music/ national anthems)
  2. Is music a science or an art? (Bach vs the Beatles).
  3. Is music "spiritual"? (Lute music/ Mozart Requiem/ Enya)
  4. Has technology changed music? Perspectives from the 21st century. (recording/ changes to amateur music making/ what constitues "live performance"? / music making in the internet age)

Based on the Oxford tutorial system, sessions will feature an introductory lecture by Kathryn, illustrated by recordings, scores and some live musical demonstration, followed by guided discussions in which participants will share their ideas and impressions. Refreshments will be served half way through each session.

Fees: $190 per person per course for four 2-hour sessions. All materials provided. Some bursaries available. No previous musical experience necessary.
