The Secret Language of Music

An Introduction to How Western Music Works and Why

For many of us, music is a mainstay of our life. We turn to music to relax, for inspiration, for succour, for community, or for emotional release and enjoyment. In music, we find a moving, interesting and enlightening framework for living that can't be found anywhere else. But as ubiquitous and important as music may be in our lives, for many of us, music is still a closed book, a complicated technical art that we have never really understood, no matter how much we listen.

This course offers some key tools for unlocking the secret language of music - how it uses tunes and chords (melody and harmony), why some music sounds "happy" while other sounds "sad", what musical form is and why it works, and what we are doing when we sing or play, whether alone or together.

The goal of the course is to lift the veil on this most elusive art, and to give participants some simple tools that will greatly enhance their understanding of music, and with it, their listening and music-making pleasure.

Each session will be based around specific pieces of music and related themes (recordings provided for advanced listening).

This course takes place in four 2-hour sessions, one for each topic:

  1. How music speaks: the secret power of melody
  2. How music can be a "thing": the secret of musical shape and form
  3. How music creates effects: the secret life of keys and other musical devices
  4. When music stands alone: the special power of music without words

Based on the Oxford tutorial system, sessions will feature an introductory lecture by Kathryn, illustrated by recordings, scores and some live musical demonstration, followed by guided discussions in which participants will share their ideas and impressions. Refreshments will be served half way through each session.

Fees: $190 per person per course for four 2-hour sessions. All materials provided. Some bursaries available. No previous musical experience necessary.
